Catalog / Present / Communicate: The IMAI Foundation’s Video Art on the Internet

IMAI Symposium Museums and the Internet

At this year’s IMAI symposium, Museums and the Internet, organized by Landschaftsverband Rheinland, the IMAI Foundation, and the institut bild.medien (Hochschule Düsseldorf), present their current joint project.

The project Video Online-Archiv—Erschliessen / präsentieren / kommunizieren: Erschliessung und Indexierung von Bewegtbilddaten der Stiftung IMAI (Video Online Archives—Catalog / Present / Communicate: Describing and Indexing the IMAI Foundation’s Moving Image Data) is sponsored by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung and seeks to catalog the foundation’s video art holdings in a scholarly way and make them available online as an informative database.

Thanks to a grant from the LVR, IMAI’s primarily analog video art holdings were digitized and incorporated into a long-term archive to contemporary standards between 2015 and 2017. The current project seeks to provide an innovative form of online access. For this purpose, texts and metadata on the video works are being systematically compiled using art- and media-historical methods. This data forms the basis for semantically oriented search options. The project has set itself the task of developing a future-capable media art portal that supports scholarly, artistic, and curatorial research.
